Filingpoint A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique eight-digit number the central government assigns to anyone intending to become or already working as a company director. The DIN confirms a person's identity in an electronic database, preventing people from impersonating directors and discouraging illegal practices like "phoenixing." It is also a requirement for anyone to register as a Director of a company and helps the central government keep an accurate record of all Directors in their registry.

Anyone can apply for a DIN by submitting an online application via the Ministry of Corporate Affairs website. Once the information is verified and authenticated, the applicant will receive their DIN via email or letter from MCA. Upon receiving their DIN, an individual can then use it to file documents with the Registrar of Companies. However, if the DIN is not used for 12 months, it will automatically deactivate.

To avoid this, individuals should ensure they file their annual KYC update via eForm DIR 3 KYC by the due date. If they fail to do so, their DIN will be marked as "Deactivated due to Non-filing of DIR-3 KYC" by the Ministry.

If this happens, an individual can reactivate their DIN by filing an e-form INC 22A with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. This form requires verification of their identity, address, and other details as well as an affidavit from them stating they have never been appointed as a Director in any company and that their DIN has not been used for filing any documents with the ministry or with any authority.
