The Government of India has launched the Startup India program to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. This initiative offers a range of advantages and recognition to startups that meet certain criteria. However, to gain recognition under the program, startups must register their business with the government.
To be eligible for Startup India Registration, companies must be incorporated as a private limited company or registered partnership firm, and have a turnover that does not exceed Rs 100 crore in any financial year since the date of incorporation/registration. In addition, the entity should be working towards development or improvement of products, processes, services or scalable business model with high potential for wealth creation and employment generation. The business must also not have been formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
After meeting the above requirements, a business can apply for recognition as a Startup on the government's official website. The application must include a letter of recommendation, an overview of the company's product or service, and a short write-up on how the business is working towards innovation in the industry. Once the application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
After receiving recognition, a Startup can take advantage of tax benefits including Income Tax exemption under Section 80 IAC. Additionally, startups are allowed to self-certify compliance with six labor laws and three environment laws.
