Filingpoint A Director Identification Number (DIN) is an eight-digit number the central government assigns to anyone who wants to become or already works as a company director. This number is valid for life, meaning it cannot be revoked or transferred. Having one makes it easier to keep track of the directors of a firm and helps the government prevent illegal practices like "phoenixing," whereby individuals use an existing DIN to make new appointments, while keeping their old ones active.

Those looking to obtain a DIN can apply via the Ministry of Corporate Affairs( MCA ) website. They must provide photo ID and proof of address before their application can be processed. Once approved, they can then use their DIN to submit documents to the registrar of companies.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs requires all new and existing directors to file an e-form DIR-3 KYC at least once every year. Those who miss the due date will have their DIN marked as "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC" by the Ministry. The person can re-activate their DIN by filing the e-form DIR-3 KYC again, but they will be required to pay a late fee of INR 5,000.

Any changes to a director's particulars should also be filed in a web-based form called DIR-6. There are no fees for this annual updation, but any changes made after the due date will attract a penalty.
